Our Origin...

Land grant universities, which include the University of Maryland at College Park and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore were established by the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890. Maryland Cooperative Extension is a lifelong learning system bringing together educational resources and research activities of two land-grant universities, 23 counties and Baltimore City. This unique, publicly funded system was initiated by the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 and companion legislation in each state and territory. The "cooperative" comes from the funding partnership of federal, state and county government sharing in the financial support of the local program. Worcester County has had an Extension Office since 1915, when John F. Monroe arrived as the first County Agent. Extension was designed to "educate citizens to apply practical, research-based knowledge to critical issues facing individuals, families, communities, the state and our global partners." Accomplishments of this goal is reached through workshops, seminars, clinics, newsletters, on-site visits, classes and media efforts. A core group of community leaders help serve as the Extension Advisory Council. These volunteers help determine unmet county needs and make recommendations of ways Worcester County Cooperative Extension can address those needs through quality educational programs.

Worcester County Cooperative Extension's office is located on River Street in Snow Hill. The office is open 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. weekdays, closed on County holidays.
